Wimbledon: The Williams sisters defeat of Germany’s Julia Goerges and Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic in the semi-finals for a place in their first Grand Slam doubles final since their 2012 win was not all plain sailing.
Although the result will show a two sets to love victory, 6: 7 (3: 7), 4:. 6, unseeded pair Serena and Venus were made to work hard for Friday’s win at SW19. in particular, the serve of Goerges was causing the Americans all sorts of challenges.
However, despite being broken in both sets by the Goerges/Pliskova service combination, Venus and Serena found the higher gear at the right times. Their path to yet another final was set up by a superior combination of power and placement when they needed it. In fact, the sisters made things look rather like child’s play in the end, despite Serena clearly having to also think about other things (like another singles crown opportunity).
